Book Donation Turn-over Program of SMU to Adopted Barangays in Nueva Vizcaya

The Kalinga Center, the Extension arm of Saint Mary's University, with the participation of the Philippine Librarians Association, Inc.- Cagayan Valley (PLAI-R02), and the SMU Library Staff, was recipient of book donation from the Multimedia Multicultural Children's Literature Association of the Philippines, Inc. (MMCLAPI) and the National Library of the Philippines. These books are intended to be given to the selected Barangays of Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya and some towns of the province which have prepared a place for these donated materials.

Saint Mary's University (SMU) Library and the Kalinga Center turned-over the said books in a program held last November 26, 2008 in celebration of the National Book Week and the Library and Information Science Month Celebration.

The program was spearheaded by Dr. Enrique T. Cayaban, SMU Director of Libraries, Dr. Isabelita Rabec, Kalinga Center Director, and the BLIS faculty and students. The activity was graced by Fr. Manuel Valencia, SMU President, Dr. John Palina, SMU VP for Administration, Dr. Nena Valdez, VP for Academic Affairs, Dr. Moises Alexander Asuncion, Dean of School of Education and some Barangay captains and councilors of the recipient barangays.

The recipients of the books donated by the MMCLAPI and the Quezon City Public Library were the following barangays of Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya namely: 1) Vista Alegre; 2) Sta. Rosa ; and some barangays in Sta. Fe, Ambaguio and Solano, Nueva Vizcaya.

The Library and Information Science (LIS) practicum students were tasked to organize the said books donated to the different barangays and will be called "Barangay Reading Center." Dr. Enrique T. Cayaban, SMU Director of Libraries, and Mr. David A. Cabonero, SMU LIS Coordinator gave an assurance that the organization of their mini-library will be taken cared of by the LIS practicum students.
